Worldly Wednesday: Gymnastics 2013 World Championships

Worldly Wednesday

U-S-A! Pretty solid chant when it comes to world gymnastics, especially in the case of women's gymnastics. Today rounded out all of the qualification rounds, and the real deal starts tomorrow. To get to the final competition, countries had their athletes compete either on all four events to qualify for all-around and event competitions, or on just on single events to advance to event finals. Honestly, I don't know tons about men's gymnastics, probably more than my average reader, but that probably isn't saying much. So I will stick with the girls.

This year, the US sent four girls to Antwerp, Belgium, to compete for world titles. Kyla Ross, Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney and Brenna Dowell flew over a couple weeks back to start practicing and training. When it came down to deciding who would compete what, Brenna kind of got shoved aside to let the other three compete all-around. You see, the US can only have three athletes compete on each of the four events. So, if they all want to contend for an all-around spot, they all have to compete, leaving poor Brenna as an alternate. Fair, I think not. Why? Because she's got some good routines. She has worked hard. And to be honest, McKayla is not quite up to snuff on bars and beam yet, as today's performance showed. Plus, to make it seem even more weird, the US can only have two people advance to all-arounds. So Kyla and Simone snatched that up, even even McKayla beat out girls from other countries. She can't compete. And if nothing else, it would have given Brenna some international experience on a huge stage. Not to mention the fact that her name is Brenna. How cool is that.

She would rep the name and rep it well. And, it definitely wouldn't hurt for the name to gain a little popularity and recognition. Perhaps, I would get fewer Brendas and Briannas and Brinas or whatever else people come up with for my name. I might actually get a Brenna on the first shot. So I am rooting for her. My vote: Let her compete!

But she didn't. This doesn't mean that the US was stinky, we did fantastics. You can check out all the scores if you are interested in that type of thing. But to break down who is competing later this week:

  • Simone: Vault, bars, beam, floor and all-around.
  • Kyla: Bars, beam, floor and all-around.
  • McKayla: Vault.

Okay, even if all of that confused you and you think I am a little strange, don't let that stop you from enjoying some beautiful gymnastics. We can all admire these young athletes and the amazing things they can do. Enjoy!

Remember the amazing vaulter from the Olympics. The not impressed face. She's back and as high-flying as ever.

Kyla - no one steadier.

Watch for Simone's second tumbling pass. It's a double layout with a half twist, which is now named after her because she was the first to compete it.

Here is the routine that wasn't.

I am not a country hater though. These are some other nice routines for your enjoyment.

If you are interested, you can watch the competitions online from USA Gymnastics.
