Behind the first gates, 1,097 Confederate soliders are buried. Most of these soliders died during the Civil War at the Charlottesville, Va., General Hospital.

Soliders from 11 different Southern states are represented in the cemetery.

Some of the graves looked like the original grave markers, but these two represent the majority of the graves — an updated marble stones.

Cole read lots of the graves. Each one listed the names, dates of birth and death if known, and rank in the Confederate army.

John Shore's grave was still an older version with guns crossed on top.

Besides the Confederate soliders, more than 900 distinguished University members, staff and their families are also buried in the cemetery.

The family graves ranged from basic stones, to more elaborate designs like this bouquet of roses.

This grave belongs to the Minor family. John Minor lived from 1813 to 1895 and was the only law professor at the university in 1845 at the age of 32. His Institues of Common and Statue Law is recognized as standard. work.

Lots of University people were buried here, including past presidents, librarians and professors.
