2016 NorCal Classic Starts Off Bay Area College Gymnastics

Stanford gymnasts huddle up before starting their first meet of the season on beam.
College gymnastics has officially started! And Cole and I got to see some Bay Area teams compete for the first time this season at the 2016 NorCal Classic in San Jose at San Jose State University. This meet also gave me a chance to try out my new camera that I got for Christmas. I definitely need some more practice, but it was fun to use a camera with such a fast shutter. (Cole likened it to when we watch elites compete, especially on beam, and you can hear the shutter rapidly firing in the background the whole time.)
This meet brought together San Jose State, home team; Sacramento State; UC Davis; Stanford, now ranked 22; and California, now ranked 11. These teams also include gymnasts with some recognizable names such as Elizabeth Price or Ivana Hong. I'm a fan of all gymnastics, so I was stoked.
And as a disclaimer before you look at photos before, yes, we followed Stanford around the gym. This is doable because the stands aren't really full and you don't have assigned seats. They are also our "local" team, seeing as they are only about 15 minutes away and accessible via Caltrain for me.
This meet also helped my Fantasy Gymnastics team. I saw some pretty impressive people from Sacramento State and added them to my lineups ASAP.
In case you want to know allllll the scores and details from the meet, you can view the PDF of that from Stanford. But in short, Elizabeth Price won all the individual honors, but in the end Cal won the team competition.
Get ready for more gymnastics! I plan on going to as many local meets as I can, including the next Stanford meet on Jan. 24. I hope to see you there!
Ivana Hong competes on beam with her usual skill and grace. Unfortunately, she fell during the routine, making Stanford count a fall on beam.
Elizabeth Price smiles as she jumps on floor during a routine that earned a 9.9.
Jenna Frowein starts the Stanford team out on floor with a 9.6.
Elizabeth Prices flies over the vault, pretty much literally.
The vault judge carefully marks down the score after each vault.
The San Jose State team celebrates after a great bar routine.
Freshman Dare Maxwell gets some words of encouragement, I assume, from Senior Taylor Rice.
Ivana Hong ends her bar routine with a nice double layout.
UC Davis finishes the meet in fourth place with a 192.7.
Sacramento State keeps it competitive with Cal and Stanford, finishing third and less than half a tenth behind Stanford.
Taylor Rice finishes third in the all-around competition.
Elizabeth Price sweeps the honors: first on vault, bars, beam and floor, and the all-around competition.
In the end, Cal walks away with the first place team honor.
