Adventures in Area Aviation

Cole finally got to visit the aviation museum he drives by every day when he goes to work.
We haven't really done anything too exciting as of late. That's mostly because of work, either too much or too draining or both. But, we did break away for a weekend of fun at our local plane museum. Cole drives by this cool cat place every day when he heads to work even. Meet the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, California.
This gem features "historic achievements in flight that are native to Northern California," according to the brochure I picked up in the gift shop/admission depot. And if you were thinking, "Depot, that sounds more trainy than planey," you'd be right. But wait, this place didn't just have planes this weekend. It had trains, cute mini trains. What luck!
I won't bore you with the aviation specifics. If you like that stuff, you can read info on the site or check it out yourself with the virtual tour, and honestly, that tour is probably pretty similar to the real thing. One quite entertaining area was the Drone Plex. For additional money, you can learn to fly a drone and then actually fly it there inside the building. We watched and laughed as some like 8 year olds tried to hover inside the cage. The result was a bunch of broken blades and some scary flying moments.
Overall, the museum is kind of old and clunky, but they are doing their best to keep the spirit of flying alive. Would I go again? If you really wanted to.
Under its roof, this museum has lots of planes and other flying things.
Cole gives the Wright flyer simulator a try. He even flew between the buildings before crashing.
Look at him go!
This wacky things lifts up off the ground and hovers. It looks super unsafe, especially in the videos.
The mannequins in this place are ...
For an additional fee, you can fly drones. These kiddos and dude weren't so great at it.
We didn't fly them, but we left with Cole wanting to buy a drone. Great, just what we need.
Pilot Cole is ready to take off.
These museum visitors try their hand at the lab activity.
Outside the back door of the museum, you can watch real planes take off and land at the little airport.
Of course, we go on the weekend when they had trains.
This little conductor loved watching the train.
The detail on the little Swedish set was amazing.
Even the big kids think the trains are pretty cool ;)
