Electric smart Test Drive

You're reading right, I test drove a smart car, an electric one at that.

As some of you know, I want a smart car. The super cute little guys look like the perfect way to zip around town. So, when I saw an ad on NPR to test drive one, I jumped at the chance. Even better, I was going to get to test drive the new electric model.

For the funtestdrive, we traveled to the Georgetown area of D.C. When we got there, Cole opted to drive the gas version, and I hopped in an electric one.

The electric one's name is Ed. He is a pretty cool car, having a Twitter account and all (@smartUSAEd).

WasterSense logoInside the green and white coupe, it felt like a regular car — not smooshed. My car started with the turn of a key and silently ran. On the dash, you can see the charge left in the motor and if you are charging or draining while you drive. Everything else looked and operated like a regular car. And to go, you just press the fun pedal (makes sense because the gas is gone). When fully charged, the battery lets you cruse 60 to 90 miles between plug-ins. While you do lose some acceleration speeds of 60-plus, the car easily zips around cities and opens up parking possibilities. Which, after some time in D.C., is ideal.

For $25,000 you can purchase an all-electric smart car, and some states, such as California and Georgia, offer tax incentives up to $10,000. Plus, you won't be spending money on fuel, and smart helps you figure out what to do with those extra funds with its fun calculator. I could buy Cole and I matching racecar beds! So, in the end, it's a bargain, cute and helps the environment. Win-win-win. :)

The best part — Cole left the test drive a little more okay with the thought of owning one someday. Yay! Plan = success.

Very fun! What colors can you choose? We saw a couple this weekend...like weird brown colors....not my choice at all.

They have like black, red, grey and white. And then you get to pick the little side color, too. And in the regular version, there are more standard colors. But... you can always do a custom one! They had a few crazy ones with like animals and such that you could test drive.
