Green Speak Monday: Green Valentine's Day
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
Behind all the pink and red, a little green can peer out from beneath all of the sugar on Valentine's Day. No, not green as in cold, hard cash. The type of green flowing through electric cars and compost heaps.
While you shower your sweetheart with love, embrace Mother Nature with a little love, too.
Try these green Valentine's Day tips if you are the last minute type or file them away for the next time you want to show someone some sugar.
1. Use recycled materials. Little children pull this off with ease. Slather glue on a piece of cardboard, sprinkle on a little plastic and scribble with a crayon. Presto, Valentine. In the case of my Valentine I got a little early, it was drawn on some of mom's used copy paper, slopped in a puddle on the way inside the gym and handle with a cute, 6-year-old smile behind it. Also, try these five ideas from Crafting a Green World.
2. Bask in a glow of green. Instead of extravagant dining and a night on the town, stay home and set the mood while going green. Save energy by shutting off the lights and enjoying the flicker of candles, perhaps even bees-wax of pure vegetable oil candles for an even green night. Go a step further by turning the heat down as well. Then, with the candle or fire light glowing, you can cuddle and savor Valentine's Day. For more green date ideas, for warmer nights, see care2's other ideas.
3. Green your taste buds. Take a trip to your local fresh food store. Eating local and seasonal perks your taste buds and your eco-friendly appetite. Not sure where you local organic store would be? Find it with the Organic Food Store Locator.
Less than 24 hours now to green up a holiday full of spending and splurging on nongreen merchandise. Save yourself and the planet, making the holiday as sweet as it is suppose to be.
