Helping Virginia High School Students Become Jayhawks

Wearing blue to rep KU.
As you might have read, KU's Office of Admissions asked me to attend a college fair at Albemarle High School on April 9. I brushed up on my facts and recalled memories — that part was easy.
- Beautiful campus: I walked it a million times and have a calendar on my wall.
- Study abroad in 75 countries: Andiamo! (Let's go!) That general phrase started each adventure for me during my 2009 summer in Italy, from the Colosseum to the bus ride to class.
- Top majors: Journalism brought me to KU, and it didn't disappoint. I loved my classes, but more importantly, I left with a deep skill set — TV, print, design, web, PR, news, photos.
- Dorm life: So much dorm life and so many freshman. Three years as an RA only strengthen my love and knowledge of KU. Plus, I had a co-worker in the KU guide.
- Service learning: I earned a service learning badge on my diploma because I took advantage of volunteer opportunities, such as Alternative Spring Break.
- Loudest basketball arena: Not saying you should come to KU just for Allen Fieldhouse, you'd be missing out on so many great things if you did, but ... it's an awesome part of the KU experience. I camped, saw 6 a.m. plenty and cheered alongside thousands of fans every chance I got.
To help me share, an '84 Ph.D. student joined me at the table. She studied business, so that opened up doors for great business-related conversations with students. Sadly, my majors didn't interest anyone. Thankfully, I knew plenty of people outside my major and talked to may freshman in my hall about majors. That led to great conversations about education and engineering, which are also great majors.
At the end of the night, we spread the Jayhawk news and had some interested Virginians. If nothing else, it spread KU's exposure. Our bright blue table and the word Kansas raised eyebrows and started conversations.
Maybe I'll get the chance to rep for KU again. Conversations that begin, "So, you are thinking of becoming a Jayhawk?" are fun.
