Two tickets for the KU vs. Michigan State and Duke vs. Kentucky games I mailed to Jay.
It's a great day for Jayhawk Nation: the 2012-2013 KU Basketball season begins. Tonight at 8 p.m. EST, the young Jayhawk team takes on Southeast Missouri State. But just because they are young doesn't mean KU fans lower expectations. I think KU Men's Basketball's cover photo says it best, "Rosters change, expectations don't." . . .

Flier stuck to my door this morning.
While I was getting ready for work, I heard a knock at the door. Who visits me? Better yet, who visits me at 8:30 in the morning? I opened the door to no one, but I had a new door ornament: a flier from an Obama supporter explaining Election Day. Today is voting day, but I already knew that, so the flier wasn't much use to me, but I am sure it helped someone else.
I have known for weeks that Election Day was Tuesday, Nov. 6 thanks to many many many many many reminders on NPR. But I didn't know the reason we drive, wait and vote on Tuesday. It dates back to the 19th century. Did you know that? I sure didn't. . . .

Well, Week 1 proved difficult for some and unexpected awesome for others. I am sad to report that the Bikini Bottom Nash Potatoes fell short, especially with their namesake out because of a leg injury. He is still alive and will be back to support the team score in a little more than a week. I hope.
Here is how the week played out:

Late this summer, I had the opportunity to capture a bunch of cute, athletic smiles for a photo company in town. My Saturday mornings were filled with lots of elementary school students, parents and soccer balls. This type of photography takes a different skill than candid photos I am accustomed to for the newspaper. These posed shots involved more planning and a greater understanding of my camera equipment than I am used to or prefer. . . .

During the hurricane, we only incurred one tangled wind chime.
Outside the wind blew and the rain fell, but that was the extent of the storm for us here in Charlottesville. It appeared no worse than a regular Midwest thunderstorm. Who would of thought we would be experiencing a hurricane so soon after our East Coast move. We lost power for a while and I have a tangled ind chime, but no harm done. I can't say those along the coast and to the north had the same luck. Hurricane Sandy or Frankenstorm, caused billions of dollars in damage. I listened to countless stories on NPR about people without power and how they were getting by. . . .
