Overblessified Thursday: Friday Fun
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
As many of you know, I interned with Mother Earth News magazine in Topeka, Kan., while I was in college. Luckily, I popped into the office to help on Fridays. The day of fun. (But really, most days at Mother Earth News are fun.) Plus, I learned a ton of knowledge from my co-workers, including how to score triple words at Scategories.
While I was working there, I was also in a class that required me to work on my writing and type for 10 minutes each night. I actually came up with some fun stories in that short time span.
If you have ever played Scategories, you will be able to relate to the fun that was had on this Friday at work last year.
Friday fun...
Tick, tick, tick, tick…. and snap! I laid my black pen down with a sigh. “That sucked. I am going to look really dumb,” I thought to myself. As I scanned through my 12 answers, only about four looked like they stood a chance.
Friday fun was quickly fading. As I sat in the conference room in the middle of the table, with my boss next to me, the 10 other faces had mixed reactions to the timer buzzing. Only two people had a happy demeanor. Everyone else either had their brows furrowed or their heads cocked to one side while they gazed at their scribbles.
Thankfully, I was not the first to read my answers in this battling game of Scategories. A mob of word wizards makes me intimidated. These people sit around and whirl up words for a living. How was I going to even come out alive?
Boys name was the first category. An easy one. As the odd names that started with A went around the table, I sheepishly said, “Arnold,” hoping no one else had copied me. I wanted to leave work knowing I scraped out one point. Phew, one point I thought as a circled the word in dark ink. On to number two. Failure came when I had copied the person three seats ahead of me. Bummer, I thought, as I dashed a quick line through my second word.
The game continued on like that for about 20 minutes. Nothing too astonishing came from my words. But by the end, my fears of looking like the dunce of the group had subsided. The room was filled with laughter and friendly competition the whole time. I had nothing to worry about. So as I passed in my white sheet with 14 winning points, while that wasn’t the high score, I could at least know I had a little creativity in me. Plus, 14 is my favorite number. Friday really was fun.
Too bad it's really only Thursday. I could go for some Friday fun about now.
