Overblessified Thursday: Job Promotion
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
Lots of Facebook love because of my TFC job promotion.
Earlier this week, the love poured in on Facebook when I posted that I got a job promotion. Little did many know, this job promotion was really just a fun name change. Not much else really changed in my life. You see, I have been a designer/intern for TFC since graduating high school in May 2007. This job promotion from camp design intern to just designer granted by Abbie meant I could just design anything and everything for TFC when they call on me. We decided designer was my true title because I have been doing other side jobs such as mission trip and theme items.
Even though this title didn't bring me power or money, it did bring me needed joy.
For a while now, I have just been struggling with being content in my daily nine to six. (I live on the East Coast but am on a midwest time frame, hence 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) I love writing. I love creating. I love searching for the interesting. I love doing things and doing them well. Sadly, most days I am just plugging away on the same old same old because that is what is expected. Going beyond and digging deep like I was taught all those years at the KU journalism school isn't frowned upon, it just isn't needed. It's not valued. Taking the extra time to call a third person or find the original source makes for a great story, but, in the end just means you are five assignments behind and 20 emails away from ending the day. For me though, it's those extra tidbit that make the story. They flush it out and makes it whole. It makes it my own. It's new. It's not just scrubbed up with a few different words and names compared to the last version. So I do it. I work extra. But in the end, I feel no joy or satisfaction from it.
So, as the status likes came in this week, I smiled. It reminded me of why I do what I do for TFC, even if I don't get paid for it. What I do for TFC takes me back to why I love writing and creating. I get to tell a story in images for the staff to use to spread the good news. My product is used for a cause I am passionate about. Plus, my co-workers at TFC are also passionate about what they are doing. It's a pleasure to work alongside my favorite co-workers, even if they live in Phillipburg, Kan., and I see them in person almost never.
It makes a world of difference when everyone wants to help everyone and create something beautiful, no matter the time and energy costs. Now cut to super cheese. When I wrote that last sentence, I was thinking, "We are all in this together." Yes, I am from the age of High School Musical. So, enjoy, but try not to notice the horrible "Were" typo in the title of this video.
But in all seriousness, I am thankful that I get to do fun jobs that remind me of my true love of creating. It might be TFC shirts. It might be wedding invites for a bestie. And like tonight, it might just be jotting thoughts on a blog. Without these, I'd go crazy. I'd still be in my sad state about the daily grind. Instead, I can smile because of simple Facebook likes and the chance to create another day.
I am truly overblessified.
