Overblessified Thursday: Toes in the Cali Ocean
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
Wildflowers are pretty, until they attract bees.
Overblessified for many reasons this past weekend.
- Had adventures.
- Saw Janel again.
- Went on an easy hike.
- Saw lots of fun wildlife.
- Touched the Cali ocean — FINALLY!
1. Had adventures. This is a weekend must after a week of work, always. We traveled two-ish hours south to Monterey, California, and hiked at Point Lobos State Reserve.
2. Saw Janel again. The last time I saw Janel within a two-week span was probably college, which was more than three years ago.
3. Went on an easy hike. Yes, I know I need to be helping Cole ramp up for his crazy Alaska hike, but I am a terrible hiker. While this hike stretched about 6 miles, the terrain smoothly weaved along the shoreline, not up, up, up. Cole will be ready and survive the hike, no worries. He needed another week to break in his boots ... right?!
4. Saw lots of wildlife. Whoa, animals. Compared to most adventures, this one teemed with life: Sea lions, birds, lizardy things, bees and bunnies. They trail even had designated sea lion and bird islands.
5. Touched the Cali ocean — FINALLY. I've touched the Pacific Ocean before, just in a less American, conventional way. It was right after high school and in Costa Rica. I'm not complaining; I'm just saying I was ready the moment went Cali sand met the Pacific. At that moment, my toes weren't as excited. Brrrr. The water is cold. The locals weren't joking. Regardless, Our little beach stop presented the perfect opportunity to rest our hiking feet and give the Cali water a try.
So, if you are ever down in the Monterey, California, area, check out Point Lobos. The rocky shoreline, barking seals and blue water won't disappoint. And, if you don't believe me, click on over to my Beautiful Point Lobos Hike album. While the below photos tell some fun stories, the album really sells it.
Cole spotted this sea lion splashing, which led to more sea lion sightings.
Super Brenna.
Cole ventures on to the rocks.
One adventure got his new hiking boots wet. Testing their limits I guess.
When the chair can't go any farther, you leave it behind.
Near the end, we came across a little beach.
While pleasant looking, those waves are fiercely cold.
Hangin' with the birds.
Toes in the sand. The best.
