Photo Friday: Fancy House and Cemetery in Richmond

They had a swan bed. A. SWAN. BED.
Back a few weeks when we actually had warmish weather in January, Cole and I hit up some Richmond sights. First, we went back to the Maymont estate. We visited this place, but missed out on a tour because they were closed on a Monday. On this Saturday visit, we got a 45-minute tour inside this home from the Gilded Age. James Henry, who made his money from investments in industry such as the railroad, and his wife, Sallie Dooley, lived here from 1893 to 1925. Without any children to pass the estate on to, they donated their wealth and made their place a museum.
We just showed up for a tour, no fancy registration needed. In our group we had two young boys, probably around 6 and 8. They made the tour guide so nervous. You have valuable, breakable objects all around and two little boys who want to touch everything — what guide wouldn't be nervous. Thankfully we ended the show and tell without any incidents.
The place oozed the wealth the family possessed. From gilded mantles to personalized Tiffany windows, nothing lacked fancy. My favorite fancy thing was the swan bed. How cool would it be to sleep in a beautiful animal bed. See first image and another later in the blog.
After the tour we went to the Hollywood Cemetery. This cemetery has a notable names such as Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, Jefferson Davis, George Pickett, Virginia Governors and Supreme Court justices. We probably should have grabbed a map somewhere or gone during a tour time. While the road direction was outlined, we didn't know where to stop and see headstones. The big ones had little signs, such as the presidents and Pickett, and others were giant and unmissable. That one would be the stacked pyramid.
I'd recommend both these Richmond sights if you are in town. Check out some photos from our visit, and luckily I caught some of the golden sunset rays.
The men do their man activities in the library.
The ladies chat over in the pink and gold tea room.
The tour guides looks nervously around for the little boys as she talks about the fireplace.
From the landing you can see all the downstairs rooms.
Ladies pick out their clothes and write letters here.
It's the swan bed again.
The inside was definitely more elaborate than the outside. Still impressive, especially back in the day.
Then, we traveled down the road to visit the Hollywood Cemetery.
Famous people are buried here, such as President John Tyler and Jefferson Davis.
Here's that president I was just talking about.
Mithrandir, or Mithy, looks pretty fancy.
We are in Virginia after all, so this tribute to Jefferson Davis — flag flying and all — is no surprise.
A 90-foot pyramid pays tribute to Confederate soliders.
It's a precarious looking thing.
We visited just as the sun was setting, which made for a pretty view.
George Picket got pushed over by the fence.
The Richmond skyline on this winter day.
Bye from Richmond!
