Photo Friday: No Hunting
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
The sun sets on an open field south of Sterling, Neb., that wards off hunters with a simple sign. As I walked up to the sign, I was surprised to see this nice metal warning sitting among the grass and sunflowers. Usually these signs are just bold black and orange plastic held into a pole by a handful of haphazard nails.
"No Hunting" signs started long before plastic. In the early days, very few signs existed, but by the 1920s, farmers were getting tired of all the hunting, and that is when the first signs started appearing.
This sign is just one of the many small town finds I come across.
While I am out driving south of Lincoln reporting for the Voice News, I always seem to run across something unexpected. Today, I pull off the main road, traveled down one of the great gravel roads and drove by a house larger than the high school in the area. You could tell from about a mile away this house was something special. White fence lined the property and a black horse stood in the front yard just munching on grass. When you see houses like that in these small towns, it makes you wonder why they decided to live there. Maybe sometime I will get to report on them to find out.
