Photo Friday: University of Virginia Cemetery
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
It was a nice weekend to get out and see some local sites, in this case the UVA Cemetery.
Last weekend, Cole and I took a trip down the street a way to the University of Virginia Cemetery. This cemetery is the resting place of 1,097 Confederate soliders and more than 900 University faculty, staff and family members.
See photos from our adventure by scrolling down and visiting my University of Virginia Cemetery photo album.
The statue in the middle of the Confederate soliders was dedicated June 7, 1893 and reads,"Fate denied them Victory, but clothed them in glorious Immortality."
Cole reads graves.
This is one of the older graves in the cemetery.
A small Confederate flag waves by the grave.
A wall marked with UVa and different letters separates the graves.
On the other side of the soliders lay the University members.
The cemetery has lots of graves, and some of them are pretty large.
A handful of law faculty rest in the cemetery.
Another law man.
William Wertenbaker was a UVA grad from 1826 and was made the librarian of UVA by Thomas Jefferson that same year. He was the last surviving member of the University staff to know the founders, Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. He also knew Edgar Allan Poe and told his stories to the students.
Amen.
Nice sunny day for adventures.
Squirrel.
