So Ready for the 2014 Secret U.S. Classic

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

After months of competition drought, gymnastics hits the stage Saturday for the 2014 Secret U.S. Classic. To get my gymnastics fix, I've been surviving on YouTube videos from camp or rhythmic/trampoline meets. Not the same.

I don't really need any promo video to get excited about this event, but you might. Keep in mind, this event leads up to the P&G Gymnastics Championships Aug. 21-24, so not everyone will be there or competing all four events. But still, it's real gymnastics.

The sad news during all this gymnastics fun … I'll be traveling both weekends of competition. This Saturday, we drive back to Kansas, and then at the end of August, I'll be in a car headed to Virginia. Thankfully, all the routines will make it to YouTube in time, but the shear thrill of the win is lost. In my social media world, it will be impossible to keep the news away until I can sit and watch it.

Regardless, don't let my pity party stop you from watching.

  • TV: Universal Sports will broadcast live Aug. 2 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. EST.
  • Online: This outlet begins with the juniors at 2 p.m. EST, and leads into the senior competition.

Thankfully, gymnastics coverage has expanded past competition day, airing podium training for the real gymnastics lovers. So, on Friday, Aug. 1 at 9 a.m. EST, I can watch the junior warm up, followed by the seniors at 11 a.m. EST. If you have never watch podium training, you might be in for a shock. It doesn't have the same glitz and glamour as televised broadcasts. You can expect a camera pointed in the general direction of the gymnastics and zero commentary — just tiny flippers and lots of apparatus clunks. That, my friends, is what I will be drooling over. It's been a really long time since gymnastics fans have seen full routines and amped up difficulty. You have Olympian Kyla Ross and world champion Simone Biles, followed closely behind by one of my favs Brenna Dowell and her teammate, the Kansas girl, Madison Desch. Those are just a few of the young athletes at this meet. You can check out the whole list here.

Well, now that I have us all excited, we have about 36 hours until podium training. I'll try to contain myself.
