Worldly Wednesday: 2011 World Gymnastics Championships
Posted by Brenna Malmberg
With the Olympics less than a year away, the gymnastics community is starting to get excited about its chances. Sure, the team has struggled with injuries such as Rebecca Bross dislocated kneecap and Alicia Sacramone's torn Achilles tendon.
This left a group of youngsters flipping and twisting all the way to the podium at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo. On Oct. 11, 2011, Gabrielle Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Sabrina Vega and Jordyn Wieber competed the routines they had been drilling for weeks. But they didn't just compete they gave gold medal performances and finished on top, more than four points ahead of Russia. China took third place, more than six points behind the USA.
While I didn't pay to watch the performances live, I couldn't help myself when the videos were posted to take a peek. But you can catch the taped version on Saturday at noon on NBC. Plus, on Sunday, you can watch the taped version of the women's all-around and see how Raisman and Wieber do against the global competition. Sadly, that happens tomorrow at 4 a.m. my time, so I probably won't be watching, but I will be excited to hear how it goes when I wake up. I hope to watch it Sunday.

I can see so many combinations for the Olympic team that I don't think we can make very good prcoeitidns right now. I think it will depend on who's healthy and performs consistently in the next three big meets before the games, but here are some of my thoughts anyways Obviously team USA is weaker on bars, so it seems likely that Gabby will make the team. But with a five member team, i'm not sure if you can get away with an event specialist like (Nastia or Anna for bars). Also, I think that USA tends to sacrifice better floor workers to try and beef up their bars score (why wasn't Kytra Hunter ever on a world team?).I think Aly's floor is really the only thing keeping her on the team as of now. Even though she performs an Amanar, almost every other girl looking for a spot on the team also is. Plus, we've been seeing some lower than desirable beam scores from her due to her form. Also need to keep an eye on some of the first year seniors as Kyla Ross has been very consistent and Sarah Finnegan is showing potential for some incredible difficulty scores for her routines. Just some of my observations, I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone looks in a few weeks!
