Worldly Wednesday: Pan American Games

Posted by Brenna Malmberg

While I am awaiting the results from the artistic gymnastics competition that takes place on Monday, I thought you all should know that the United States just won the gold in badminton at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Pan Am Games take place every four years in the year before the Summer Olympics and is the second largest multi-sport event behing the Summer Olympics. These games between athletes from the Americas consist of 36 sports, 40 disciplines and 400 events.

Many events have taken place already, including trampoline and rhythmic gymnastics. On Monday, the United States has six female gymnasts that will compete for the team. This list includes Bridgette Caquatto, Jessie DeZiel (she goes to Nebraska), Brandie Jean Jay, Grace McLaughlin, Shawn Johnson and Bridget Sloan. The last two are vetrans from the 2008 Olympics, and Sloan said today she is going to work toward another Olympics.

So the sport of gymnastics will have a battle of old and young, old being a relative term, competing for one of the five Olympic spots. Including Nastia Liukin who has tweeted about training on bars, beam and floor. And a picture of ripped hands to prove it. Yay!

We will see if the United States can increase their distance in the medals race during this Pan Am Games. We are already close to 4,000, and Cuba is next with not even 2,000.
