For Fall Break this year, we went to the beach just a little more than three hours away. Hello, Virginia Beach.
During our weekend, we experienced sunny, warm weather which allowed walks on the beach, shorts and late-night putt-putt golf.
When we first arrived, we found horses trotting along the beach. Never seen that before.
We ditched the shoes and walked on the soft sand. No actual swimming though, the water proved frigid to the touch. I commend the brave, unfeeling souls that swam.
A pier jut out into the water, but it cost to even walk on it, so we skipped.
In the summer, I can imagine this place buzzes with people. It was October and people still couldn't keep away.
Check out the wheels. On the boardwalk, we rented bikes for two hours.
Cole displays his bike skills.

The next day, which wasn't quite as sunny, we drove down to Kitty Hawk, N.C. Fun fact, the site of the first flight is actually in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. now. But the first flight will always be located in Kitty Hawk, no matter what.
We walked all the way to the top of the hill the Wright brothers used to test their glider. The hill has moved nearly 600 feet since the first flying days because the area was baren and sandy. In the 1930s, they planted grass and such to root the historical landmark.
Cole loves airplanes! We sat and listened to a park ranger talk about the Wright brothers. She was actually young and fun to listen to, not dull like I would have imagined. This plane is a replica of the first flying plane.
The Wright brothers sewed their own cloth for the wings.
Here is where flight, well, took flight. Propelled off this rail, well not this exact rail, but a similar rail, Orville Wright soared 120 feet in 12 seconds on the first flight.
Cole attempted so fly down the runway, too.
There's me making my first flight!
Flight 1: Orville Wright flew 120 feet in 12 seconds on Dec. 17, 1903 at 10:35 a.m.
Flight 2: Wilbur Wright flew 175 feet in 12 seconds.
Flight 3: Orville flew 200 feet in 15 seconds.
Flight 4: Wilbur flew 852 feet in 59 seconds. That was the last flight that day.
After our Kitty Hawk visit, we stopped by the beach. It was basically deserted because of the windy, rainy weather. Only a few fishers and kite fliers enjoyed the beach that day.
